Food Drive 2010

Delivering and unloading at Pine Haven on December 3, 2010

Team of staff and consumers at Mountain State Centers for Independent Living in Beckley
In December 2010, Mountain State Centers for Independent Living in Beckley, delivered a U-Haul filled with canned goods - 5,000 items! - to Pine Haven Homeless Shelter in Beckley. It was such a success we have decided to do it again this year and make it an annual event.
In dedication to a beloved Mountain State Centers for Independent Living volunteer, this year the food drive is named the Second Annual Tommy Sizemore Food Drive.
Again this year the staff and consumers at Mountain State in Beckley have decided to Pay It Forward and we ask you to join us.
From November 1 through December 15, Mountain State Centers for Independent Living, along with other businesses and organizations in the Beckley area, will be collecting canned goods for the food drive.
Please join us as we pay it forward. You can stop by the Mountain State Centers for Independence office at 329 Prince Street in Beckley during business hours (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) to leave donated canned food. You can also donate at one of the participating businesses/organizations below where you will find a box to place the donated canned good:
List current as of November 15, 2011.
To get us started, Food Lion Beckley donated 121 Hunger Has a Cure food boxes and Food Lion in Sophia donated 200 boxes.
Both Food Lion Beckley and Sophia have food drive donation boxes in their stores where you can drop off canned goods for the food drive. The donation boxes will be in the stores through December 15.
All collected canned goods will be donated to the Pine Haven Homeless Shelter in Beckley. The Pine Haven Shelter offers temporary housing to men, women and families with children and houses up to 150 people. As the holidays approach, demand is always greater.
Any canned goods are welcome including children's favorites and baby formula.
Mountain State Centers for Independent Living (MTSTCIL) is a community-based organization providing advocacy, networking and resources to people with disabilities and their families. The centers are a place where people with disabilities are free to meet, share, learn and plan lives of greater independence and self reliance.
We at MTSTCIL are thankful for what we have, especially during this time of year, and know that not everyone is as fortunate as we are and feel it's important to give back to the community.
The staff and consumers of MTSTCIL Beckley are asking people who are in the position to help to please do so and join us as we pay it forward.
