August 4, 2006 was a hot and humid summer day, but that did not stop the 20 cyclists from Push America's Journey of Hope from getting to Beckley, WV.
As the cyclists arrived in Beckley, they were escorted down Prince Street to MTSTCIL by Corporal Mark Larkin and Captain Tomi Peck of the Beckley Police Department. MTSTCIL Office Coordinator Kevin Maynus and Mayor Emmett S. Pugh welcomed the cyclists to Beckley along with other MTSTCIL staff, consumers, members from the general public, Senator Russ Weeks and Delegate Linda Sumner.
MTSTCIL hosted dinner for the group. They feasted on lasagna, salad, rolls, cheesecake, cold drinks. Following dinner, the cyclists introduced themselves, telling where they were from and what college or university they attended. Cyclists had the opportunity to fellowship and share their journey's experiences with staff, consumers and invited guests while enjoying an ice cream bar.
Cindy Hungate, Secretary in the Beckley Office and Coordinator for their Beckley visit, was presented a Journey of Hope t-shirt and was named an honorary member of the 2006 Journey of Hope Team.
As part of the Push America's grant program that benefits people with disabilities, Ryan Boeding, Logistics Coordinator, presented MTSTCIL in Beckley a check for $750.00 to use toward our mission of "improving the lives of people with disabilities".
Media coverage was provided by Fox 59, WOAY and a news team from the Beckley Register Herald.
