Mountain State Centers for Independent Living in Beckley hosts the Self-Help and Resource Exchange (SHARE) Program every month at 329 Prince Street in Beckley, WV. The SHARE Program is brought to you by the New River Community Action in Radford, VA.
You may place your order by calling or emailing Ceretha Burdiss at cburdiss@mtstcil.org at Mountain State Centers for Independent Living in Beckley 304-255-0122. [Food stamps and cash only (no checks) accepted as payment when order is placed. Prices are subject to change.] This month's order and distribution dates:
The food package consists of basic foods - meats, fruits, vegetables and staples. Foods are like those purchase by most people every month in the grocery store. Chicken, luncheon meat, potatoes, onions, carrots, apples, oranges, pasta, rice, and beans are examples of the kind of foods typically included in the SHARE food package. In addition, speciality items like desserts or bread may also be included.
Everyone is eligible regardless of income, sex, creed, race, etc.
Participants are required to contribute two hours of community service per food package. This can include bagging food at the SHARE warehouse, working for the host organization on distribution day or any other volunteer work for which you are not paid. Some groups have special projects for participants to work on. The participant may also do community service at organizations like the Red Cross, hospitals, etc. If the participant is unable for some reason to complete community service work, he or she should contact the host for community service projects they can help with.
You can sign up for the SHARE Program by emailing Ceretha Burdiss, Community Resource Advocate, at Mountain State Centers for Independent Living, 329 Prince Street, in Beckley, WV or by calling her at 304-255-0122.
If your organization is interested in becoming a host for the SHARE Program, please contact Jean Skaggs at New River Community Action by calling 540-633-2850. For more information on the SHARE Program, you can visit SHARE at New River.
In SHARE, each participant pays for his or her food "unit" partially through a donation of time and talents in some community service. In this manner we are reminded that we are all interconnected, and that contributions of each one of us, regardless of economic status, are vital to our community.
