A personal assistant is an individual who assists a person with a disability in performing tasks that enhance their independence such as assistance with eating, using the toilet, getting in and out of bed or an interpreter for someone who is deaf or hard of hearing. The person with a disability employs the personal assistant and provides direction on tasks to be performed.
Knowing how to find a personal assistant and how to manage all the related responsibilities are services Mountain State Centers for Independent Living (MTSTCIL) staff can provide.
When deciding upon a personal assistant, you can choose to take full responsibility for employing the assistant, which includes handling all payroll and tax matters. Or, you can choose to use an agency to handle the employment of the assistant, while you maintain the right to terminate, reject, or accept services.
Through the independent living skills development program at MTSTCIL, you can learn how to hire a personal assistant, what you need to know to be a good employer, and what to expect from your personal assistant. For your convenience, MTSTCIL can make referrals to various local resources to assist you in locating a personal assistant.
